You are an experienced data scientist who will contribute to statistical post-processing of numerical weather prediction (NWP) model output and explore (post-processing of) data-driven AI-based forecast models, in collaboration with co-workers at The Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI) and European partners. You will be based at KNMI in De Bilt.

What will you be doing
In the Data Science cluster of the R&D Weather and Climate Modeling section, we research, develop and maintain several statistical and machine learning models for weather forecasting. Our focus is on statistical post-processing of NWP model output to improve probabilistic forecasts of (especially extreme) weather. This involves not only parametric regression methods, but more and more machine learning methods as well. Besides being involved in this work, you will start exploring (post-processing of) data-driven AI-based forecast models together with colleagues from KNMI and other national meteorological institutes in Europe and ECMWF. Ideally these studies lead to both practical applications to improve the probabilistic weather forecasts of KNMI as well as publications in the scientific literature. Other tasks are (co-)supervision of MSc and/or PhD students and teaching of probabilistic forecasting to (new) forecasters.

Functie-eisen

• a completed PhD degree in applied statistics with applications in weather or climate, or a similar field
• substantial experience in statistical modelling using big data sets
• experience with Python and R languages
• experience with Linux environment
• you are fluent in English, with a knowledge of Dutch, or the willingness to learn Dutch are a plus
• knowledge of and experience with statistical post-processing and machine learning (including deep learning) methods is a plus

Arbeids­voorwaarden

• Salaris­niveau schaal 11
• Maand­salaris Min €3.608 - Max. €5.503 (bruto)
• Dienst­verband Arbeidsovereenkomst voor bepaalde tijd met uitzicht op onbepaalde tijd
• Contract­duur Vast contract voorafgegaan door een jaarcontract. Bij voldoende functioneren: na een jaar omzetting in onbepaalde tijd.
• Minimaal aantal uren per week 32
• Maximaal aantal uren per week 36

Other conditions of employement

In addition to the salary and holiday pay an end-of-year payment can be expected, the so-called 13th month.
